History | According to Assorted Regulations from Three Reigns (Ruijū sandai kyaku), the decision was made to establish Niu Kawakami Shrine in response to a reported divine message received in 675 (Tenmu 4) saying that “if a shrine is built in the upper reaches of Niu River in Yoshino and I am worshipped there, for the sake of country I will make the rain fall and when there are deluges make them stop.” The deity had been worshipped since ancient times as a rainmaking (kiu) and rain-halting (shiu) divinity. The shrine’s location after the Ōnin War (1467-1477) is unknown, but the Meiji Era Niu Kawakami Shrine has been identified as corresponding to the upper, middle and lower shrines. |
